"Fortunate are those who take the first steps.” ― Paulo Coelho

Some interesting facts about CON,PRN,AUX !

Nowadays, I ‘m getting lot of mail forwarding from my friends, but frequently I used to the below hoax mail,

"An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as "CON".  This is something pretty cool…and unbelievable… At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn’t answer why this happened !

So, inform about this to all your friends." — and a lot of email hoax stories like this are in internet. Check it in etc

But actual reason behind this is,

   PRN -print,

   aux-auxiliary port…

These are reserved words. So you cannot create folder with this name.

For example, DOS Device file:

(1) CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and

LPT9. – you cannot use this reserved names for folders.

 (2) Avoid using those reserved names as a filename suffix or file name body: aux.c, file.aux or NUL.txt

I hope lot of us got this mail, but only few of us use to explore…I guess now you all cleared about this hoax mail and Indians who discovered stories etc….

Anyone got this same mail but cleared now..comment here about your experience ?

Happy explorin !

  1. Hi,Even though those are all reserved words, still we can able to create the folder names with the above by using this commandCreation  :  c:\\>md\\\\.\\c:\\con Deletion  :  c:\\>rd\\\\.\\c:\\conI hope u know this already… Take this as a refreshment.
